Review Phase 16-20

Welcome to your Last Review Phase, covering phases 16-20!

Focus on quality of technique during this one week Phase.  Make each Pillar the best you can.  Don’t settle for “good enough”.  Make each element the best you can!

Train at least 3 times on these and then CELEBRATE on making it through the entire SMITHWAY SOCCER PROGRAM! CONGRATS!!

Work each Phase where applicable using the 3-4-3 principle.  3 minutes Strong foot/side, 3 minutes Weak foot, 3 minutes The 10% or players choice.  If short on time keep the ratio 1-2-1.

Strive for 50%-80% success rate, less than 50% decrease the difficulty (speed, complexity, etc.), above 80% increase the difficulty (add defender, increase the speed etc).

Work in PERFECT CONSECUTIVE REPS.  3 out of 5, 5 out of 7, 7 out of 10Increase difficulty when above 80%.

IF STRUGGLING, break the actions into CHUNKS.  Work on one PERFECT CHUNK per section.  Try the movement in SLOW MO REPLAY.

BE WILLING TO MAKE MISTAKES!!  No progress can be achieved without TRIAL AND ERROR

Remember that HARD WORK and REPETITION are the most valuable tools in a players arsenal!!  Lionel Messi, Michael Jordan, Cristiano Ronaldo all are famous for their work ethics.

Always end with a GAME and a HIGH NOTE!

Start every session with Foundation Five Warmup.  Get started now!

Ball Striking

Ball Striking: Turn, Shaped ball, Far Post

Use any turn to go towards the inside of the field. Bend the ball with the inside of the foot to the far post. This makes the Keeper’s dive to the ball as far away from him as possible allowing the ball to curve around his outstretched hand and then into the corner

Coaching Points

  • Any turn to the inside

  • Plant foot aimed just outside the post

  • Inside of the foot using the big toe knuckle

  • Bend the ball around the keeper to the far post

Ball Protection

Ball Protection: Bob, Hook, Chop, Cruyff Kata

Now, we take all our change of direction turns and put them together.  Make sure that every turn is a Big Fake.  Make the defender get on their heels and Flinch with every fake.  In the middle, make sure that you’re squaring your hips to the Target.   Play a firm ball with the inside of the foot receiving it with the foot on the side you’re going to be working with next.  The turn sequence is: 2 Bob turns, 2 Hook turns, 2 Chop turns, 2 Cruyff.

Coaching Points

  • Same foot that passes, does the dribbling and the BOB

  • Get your hips Square in the center of the field

  • Plant foot facing your target when you make the pass

  • A teammate can always replace the wall.

Offensive Recognition

Offensive Recognition: Uncommitted Defender, Fake Matthews

Approach the Uncommitted Defender at half speed.  Touch the ball with the inside of the foot to one side.  With the SAME foot, scissor around the ball as if taking it away with the outside.  Switch to the opposite foot and drive away with the three toes.

Coaching Points

  • Approach Uncommitted Defender at half speed

  • Inside touch, scissor with the same foot.

  • Take away with the outside of the opposite foot at full speed

Body Position and Receiving

Body Position and Receiving: Rainbow Turn

Sometimes the ball takes an awkward bounce and having an extra tool in your toolbox to deal with it can be the difference between breaking down the defense and losing possession. With the defender on your back, as the ball comes in, pop the ball into the air with the other foot.  Make a half-turn and use your heel to knock the ball over the defender’s head.  Turn away from the ball and accelerate away.

Coaching Points

  • Pop the ball up with the foot farthest from the defender.

  • Half Turn

  • Use heel to pop ball over defender’s head

Aerial Receiving

Aerial Receiving: Jumping Header

The same rules apply here as to a standing header. Keep your eyes open, mouth shut, and elbows up. Now we use our legs to propel ourselves into the air to reach the ball at its highest point. Find your power from arching your back and snapping the upper body and neck through the ball.

Coaching Points

  • Eyes open, mouth shut, elbows up

  • Time Jump to highest point

  • Arch back and snap forward at the waist

  • Attack ball with the forehead
