Phase 2

Welcome to Phase 2!  A few guidelines for how I would like the kids to train to insure as close to an optimum learning curve as possible.

This program is designed in 2 week blocks to make sure the concepts begin to be habit forming.

For maximum results the player should work through the drills a minimum of 3x per week.  Preferably on the days that they do not have practice or a game.

REMEMBER, it is always better to work a few minutes a day vs one long session a  week.

Work each Phase where applicable using the 3-4-3 principle.  3 minutes Strong foot/side, 3 minutes Weak foot, 3 minutes The 10% or players choice.  If short on time keep the ratio 1-2-1.

Strive for 50%-80% success rate, less than 50% decrease the difficulty (speed, complexity, etc.), above 80% increase the difficulty (add defender, increase the speed etc).

Work in PERFECT CONSECUTIVE REPS.  3 out of 5, 5 out of 7, 7 out of 10Increase difficulty when above 80%.

IF STRUGGLING, break the actions into CHUNKS.  Work on one PERFECT CHUNK per section.  Try the movement in SLOW MO REPLAY.

BE WILLING TO MAKE MISTAKES!!  No progress can be achieved without TRIAL AND ERROR

Remember that HARD WORK and REPETITION are the most valuable tools in a players arsenal!!  Lionel Messi, Michael Jordan, Cristiano Ronaldo all are famous for their work ethics.

Always end with a GAME and a HIGH NOTE!

Start every session with Foundation Five Warmup or the Foundation Combos Below.  Get started now!

Ball Striking

Ball Striking: Pro Step, Inside

Players that strike the ball well have a long, airborne step as their last stride.  We call this the PRO STEP.  It insures a good plant foot, strength as well as momentum for the follow through.

Coaching Points

  • Put your plant foot along side the ball

  • Lunge back with your Shooting foot and stand up

  • Stand on your Shooting foot and swing your Plant foot

  • Throw your body in the air and land your plant foot next to the ball

  • Strike it with the inside of the foot, toe up and out.

Ball Protection

Ball Protection: Between

Gaining position on a defender is the first step to winning possession or keeping possession.  Getting “Between” is a simple concept, but it has to be made into a habit.

Coaching Points

  • Get “Between” the opponent and the ball.

  • Step in with the inside leg and make yourself big. Arms out, knees bent and get strong!

  • Deal with the ball AFTER getting “Between

Offensive Recognition

Offensive Recognition: Committed Defender, The Chair

A Committed Defender is easy to beat if recognized early.  Simply avoiding the tackle to the side and accelerating past is enough.  Use the Defenders Triangle if you cant use a committed defender

Coaching Points

  • As defender approaches, roll the ball with the sole of the foot across the body in a straight line

  • Switch to the inside of the opposite foot and play the ball alongside the defender

  • Accelerate away

Body Position and Receiving

Body Position and Receiving: Drift Run, Far Foot

Time and Space are a players best friends.  A Drift Run  separates you from the defender. Receiving the ball with the Far Foot gives us good body position that provides information.  It allows us to see the BDT, Ball, Defender and Target.

Coaching Points

  • Drift away from your defender

  • Receive the ball with your Far Foot

  • Make sure you can see BDT, Ball, Defender, Target

  • Drive away with the outside of the foot

Aerial Receiving

Aerial Receiving: Inside Wedge

When you cannot take the ball directly out of the air, one of the most common ways is to cover the bounce with the inside of the foot, flattening the balls flight to the side.

Coaching Points

  • Angle the knee in and the foot out.

  • Cover the ball with inside of the foot as it hits the ground

  • Lean towards your plant foot and dribble away.
