Phase 18

Welcome to Phase 18!  A few guidelines for how I would like the kids to train to insure as close to an optimum learning curve as possible.

This program is designed in 2 week blocks to make sure the concepts begin to be habit forming.

For maximum results the player should work through the drills a minimum of 3x per week.  Preferably on the days that they do not have practice or a game.

REMEMBER, it is always better to work a few minutes a day vs one long session a  week.

Phase Guidelines

3-4-3 PRINCIPLE (where applicable)

3 minutes Strong foot/side, 3 minutes Weak foot, 3 minutes, the 10% or players choice.
If short on time keep the ratio 1-2-1.

50%-80% SUCCESS RATE

Less than 50% decrease the difficulty (speed, complexity, etc.), above %80 increase the difficulty (add defender, increase the speed etc).

PERFECT CONSECUTIVE REPS

3 out of 5, 5 out of 7, 7 out of 10Increase difficulty when above %80.

Chunks

Work on one PERFECT CHUNK per section.  Try the movement in SLOW MO REPLAY.

TRIAL AND ERROR

BE WILLING TO MAKE MISTAKES!! No progress can be made without doing it wrong first!

HARD WORK and REPETITION

These are the most valuable tools in a players arsenal!!  Lionel Messi, Michael Jordan, Cristiano Ronaldo all are famous for their work ethics.

Always end with a GAME and a HIGH NOTE!

Ball Striking

Ball Striking: Inside Foot, Far Post

Having composure inside the box requires a relaxed body and a calm mind. Use the leg farthest from the goal to protect the ball from the defender. Use the inside of the foot to keep the ball low and place it in the corner.

Coaching Points

  • Use the leg farthest from the goal

  • Use the inside of the foot keeping the toe up to make sure the ball stays low

  • Place the ball past the keeper in the far post

Ball Protection

Ball Protection: Chop Kata

The Chop Kata is done with an exaggerated ball fake making sure that the plant foot goes behind the ball so that when we cut it across our body there’s plenty of space. Drive away with the outside of the opposite foot. When you get back to the center, square up and use the opposite foot to play the ball.  Receive the ball with the same foot and repeat on the opposite side.

Coaching Points

  • Big Shot fake

  • Plant foot behind the ball

  • Chop the ball with the inside of the foot

  • Accelerated way with the outside of the foot

Offensive Recognition

Offensive Recognition: Uncommitted Defender, Stepover with Cutout

Approach the uncommitted defender at half speed.  Cross one foot over the top of the ball and set it down.  Drive away with the same foot, using the outside of the foot at full speed.

As soon as your HIPS are past the defenders, cut behind them to take them out of the play.

Coaching Points

  • Hard swivel of the hips across the ball

  • Accelerate away with the same foot

  • Cut behind the defender as soon as possible

Body Position and Receiving

Body Position and Receiving: Turn and Wall Pass

Make a turn to the outside away from your teammate’s run.  Immediately play the ball back to him between the first and second defender with the outside leg.  Receive it on the other side of the defender before continuing on.

Coaching Points

  • Turn away from your teammates run

  • Outside leg plays the pass

  • Accelerate past Defender

Aerial Receiving

Aerial Receiving: Flick Header

A Flick header helps the ball continue in the general direction it’s traveling. Using the top of the head or even the forehead, flick the ball by making contact with the bottom of the ball and moving your head in the direction of travel. Even a slight deflection near the goal can cause the keeper to misjudge the ball.

Coaching Points

  • Contact the bottom of the ball

  • Use the top of the head to flick the ball in the direction the ball is traveling

  • Follow through with the head in the direction of ball
