Phase 11

Welcome to Phase 11!  A few guidelines for how I would like the kids to train to insure as close to an optimum learning curve as possible.

This program is designed in 2 week blocks to make sure the concepts begin to be habit forming.

For maximum results the player should work through the drills a minimum of 3x per week.  Preferably on the days that they do not have practice or a game.

REMEMBER, it is always better to work a few minutes a day vs one long session a  week.

Maximize Learning Guidelines

3-4-3 PRINCIPLE (where applicable)

Break each segment into 3 parts.

3 minutes- strong side
4 minutes- weak side
3 minutes players choice- any skill/move/pass/trick or shot.  (suggestions are in the 10% vault)

50%-80% SUCCESS RATE

If your success rate is less than 50% decrease the difficulty (speed, complexity, etc.), If you are achieving 80% success or greater, increase the difficulty (add defender, increase the speed etc).

PERFECT CONSECUTIVE REPS

3 out of 5, 5 out of 7, 7 out of 10Increase difficulty when above %80.

Chunks

Work on one PERFECT CHUNK per section.  Try the movement in SLOW MO REPLAY.

TRIAL AND ERROR

BE WILLING TO MAKE MISTAKES!! No progress can be made without doing it wrong first!

HARD WORK and REPETITION

These are the most valuable tools in a players arsenal!!  Lionel Messi, Michael Jordan, Cristiano Ronaldo all are famous for their work ethics.

Recommended Footwork

Ball Striking

Ball Striking: Laces, L-PROSTEP

Start with your plant foot alongside the ball take a lunge step back. Then lunge step to the left or right opposite the foot you’re going to kick with, completing the L shape. The change here is that we’re coming from an angle with a pro step so the plant foot has to twist to point at the Target when we land. Make sure that the PROSTEP is long and quick and drive the laces through the ball. Keep a locked ankle through the follow-through.

Coaching Points

Coaching points

  • Lunge back from plant foot

  • Lunge over one step

  • Prostep to the ball long and quick

  • Twist plant foot to point at target

  • Keep ankle locked all the way through the follow-through

Ball Protection

Ball Protection: Sole Receive, Sole Roll

Receive the ball sideways on in a shielding position, with the sole of the foot.  Patiently wait for the defender to overplay them from behind and then sole roll and seal off the defender driving away.

Coaching Points

  • Receive the ball sideways

  • Receive with the sole of the foot

  • Be Patient and wait for the Defender to overplay

  • Sole roll the ball away from the defender sealing them off.

Offensive Recognition

Offensive Recognition: Hip Clues

When a defender is running alongside an attacker, the defender gives simple clues on how to beat them.

Look for the defenders HIPS.  If they are BEHIND the attacker, simply cut in front and gain the positional advantage into the space. “Hips Behind, the Goal is Mine”

If the defenders hips are in FRONT of the attacker, cut the ball behind them and accelerate away. “Hips that Beat me Cut it Sweetly”

Coaching Points

  • Clue: Where are the Defenders HIPS

  • “Hips that Beat me Cut it Sweetly” Cut the ball behind the defender

  • “Hips Behind, the Goal is Mine” Drive in front of the defender

Body Position and Receiving

Body Position and Receiving: Check Run, Far Foot, Scissor

Check run the defender away. Receive the ball with the far foot.  Immediately scissor with the same foot. Attack the center of the field with the outside of the opposite foot.

Coaching Points

  • Check run

  • Far Foot receive

  • Scissor with receiving foot

  • Attack the center of the field with the opposite foot

Aerial Receiving

Aerial Receiving: Seated Header

When beginning to train heading the first technique we focus on is bending at the waist for power.

We start in a seated position, elbows out, knees extended and in a half sit-up position. Make a target with your hands and have your partner toss the ball to the target hands.  Drive your head through the ball with your hairline, bringing your elbows back and snapping the head forward.

If you have any concerns about heading being dangerous at a younger age, use any soft ball, or even a balloon.  But please make sure the technique is taught correctly.   The better the technique the less likely there is of injury as they get older.

Coaching Points

  • Eyes open mouth shut

  • Strike with the hairline

  • Drive your head through your hands

  • Drive elbows back
