Review Phase 11-15

Welcome to your third Review Phase, covering phases 11-15!

Focus on quality of technique during this one week Phase.  Make each Pillar the best you can.  Don’t settle for “good enough”.  Make each element the best you can!

Train at least 3 times on these before moving on to Phase 16.

Work each Phase where applicable using the 3-4-3 principle.  3 minutes Strong foot/side, 3 minutes Weak foot, 3 minutes The 10% or players choice.  If short on time keep the ratio 1-2-1.

Strive for 50%-80% success rate, less than 50% decrease the difficulty (speed, complexity, etc.), above 80% increase the difficulty (add defender, increase the speed etc).

Work in PERFECT CONSECUTIVE REPS.  3 out of 5, 5 out of 7, 7 out of 10Increase difficulty when above 80%.

IF STRUGGLING, break the actions into CHUNKS.  Work on one PERFECT CHUNK per section.  Try the movement in SLOW MO REPLAY.

BE WILLING TO MAKE MISTAKES!!  No progress can be achieved without TRIAL AND ERROR

Remember that HARD WORK and REPETITION are the most valuable tools in a players arsenal!!  Lionel Messi, Michael Jordan, Cristiano Ronaldo all are famous for their work ethics.

Always end with a GAME and a HIGH NOTE!

Start every session with Foundation Five Warmup.  Get started now!

Ball Striking

Ball Striking: Laces, Setup Touch

Now we progress to striking a moving ball with the laces. Push the ball out at a 45-degree angle with the outside of the shooting foot.  Take a  long quick Prostep, twisting the plant foot to point at the Target.  Strike with a locked ankle through the center of the ball. Follow through at the Target holding the locked ankle until the follow-through is complete.

Coaching Points

  • Using the outside of the foot push the ball out at a 45-degree angle to Target.

  • Prostep long and quick

  • Twist plant foot to Target

  • Keep a Locked ankle

  • Strike through the center of the ball

  • Hold locked ankle until follow through is complete

Ball Protection

Ball Protection: Sole Receive, Sole Roll

Receive the ball sideways while in a shielding position.  Patiently wait for the defender to commit to the your back side.  Sole roll and keep the defender on your back while driving away.

Coaching Points

  • Receive the ball sideways

  • Receive with the sole of the foot

  • Be Patient and wait for the Defender to overplay

  • Sole roll the ball away from the defender sealing them off.

Offensive Recognition

Offensive Recognition: Committed Defender Behind, Hip Clues

When a defender is running alongside an attacker, the defender unknowingly hints as to how he or she may be beat.

Look for the defenders hips.  If they are BEHIND the attacker, simply cut in front and gain the positional advantage into the space. “Hips Behind, the Goal is Mine”

If the defenders hips are in front of the attacker, cut the ball behind them and accelerate away. “Hips that Beat me Cut it Sweetly”

Coaching Points

  • Clue: Where are the Defenders HIPS

  • “Hips that Beat me Cut it Sweetly” Cut the ball behind the defender

  • “Hips Behind, the Goal is Mine” Drive in front of the defender

Body Position and Receiving

Body Position and Receiving: Wall Pass

The wall pass is the simplest play for two teammates to beat a defender. Play the ball to the teammate who is even with the defender.  Make your run behind the defender to receive the ball on the opposite side. Ball should be played with the inside of the foot and returned with the inside of the foot by the teammate.

Coaching Points

  • Play the pass and attack the space by running behind the defender.

  • Receive the return pass with the inside of the foot

  • Accelerate away

Aerial Receiving

Aerial Receiving: Diving Header

The diving header is one of the most spectacular ways to attack the ball. Fortunately, it only requires timing and bravery. Start in a squatting position, eyes on the ball. This time we will use our legs for power, driving our body through the ball.  Keep the eyes open and mouth shut. Strike the ball with the hairline.

Coaching Points

  • Eyes open mouth shut

  • Drive with the legs towards the ball, arms extended

  • Strike the ball with the forehead and catch yourself with your hands
